RURAL RUGBY WITH LEDBURY RFC
With the rural counties schools receiving increasing pressure from the governments to increase their pupil base it is important at this time we support & deliver quality coaching programmes to children who want extra-curricular activity, as well as curriculum based sport, fitness and exercise.
The community rugby project assists the schools as it provides a structured programme of the above mentioned therefore providing information & evidence that the schools can use to promote themselves to parents & children as well as the local authorities.
Ledbury RFC has been working closely with the Sports Council to achieve funding, attaining the necessary levels of accreditation and also planning and implementing sports activities throughout the county. Amy Jenkins explains;
The Sport Unlimited scheme has been running since April 2008, with Ledbury RFC playing a vital role in the delivery of this programme from the start. Bruce Ruthven has delivered rugby in a variety of primary and secondary schools which has given these schools a good link to Ledbury RFC. It has also made a very good contribution to Herefordshire targets in helping to achieve the aim of getting young people to do 5 hours of sport a week.
There is always an issue in Herefordshire with a lack of qualified coaches that are available to coach at certain times in the day so Ledbury RFC are in a very good position having a fully qualified coach who is available to make those vital links between schools and the club. The delivery in the rural schools has been particularly useful as these schools often miss out on opportunities due to their locality. Most coaches are not keen to go out to such rural areas due to the cost, so again Ledbury RFC is fortunate enough to have this link with these young people.
Ledbury RFC's contribution to Herefordshire Youth Games is also very important as it is a chance for schools to come and compete and use the skills that they have learnt from coaching sessions at the school. It is a very enjoyable event for young people and helps to encourage them to continue to participate in the sport.
