LEDBURY 1ST XV 34 WOLVERHAMPTON 1ST XV 24
Ledbury’s 1st XV welcomed Wolverhampton 1st XV to Ross Road for a friendly fixture last Saturday and in an entertaining match came out winners by five tries to four. For the home team this was a good opportunity to test themselves against a team from a higher division and to maintain momentum before their final two league games of the season which will decide their promotion fate. Both sides sought to move the ball wide as much as possible and this resulted in an enjoyable spectacle for players and spectators alike.
Ledbury took the lead with a try from fly half Bruce Ruthven after only three minutes, instigated by a charging run from no 8 Jamie Williams and good support and passing from Jim Handley. Wolverhampton replied with a try of their own five minutes later but when the home team scored further tries by Will Green and Jim Handley, both once again created by the excellent Williams, and converted by Luke White who also added a penalty, Ledbury seemed to have established a significant advantage.
To their credit, however, Wolverhampton hit back with two tries, one of which was converted, just before the break to leave the game in the balance at half time with Ledbury ahead by 22 points to 17. Both sets of forwards were determined not to be outdone by their opposite numbers and the match had a tighter feel for the first twenty minutes of the second half before winger Olly Kaye dived in at the corner after fine running and handling by White and Leo Lockwood.
Again Wolverhampton did not lie down and scored their fourth try after sixty four minutes, the conversion of which brought them back to trail by only 27 points to 24. With both sides seeking the decisive score it was Ledbury who finally made the match safe after seventy one minutes with a second try from Ruthven who seized upon an error in the Wolverhampton backs to steal in under the posts, leaving himself with the easy conversion.
Ledbury’s full attention is now turned to their crucial final home league match of the season against champions Spartans at 3.00 on Saturday. A large crowd is expected, and the match will be preceded by a VP lunch at 12.30 with well known TV personality Phillip Serrell as the guest speaker. Interested parties are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.
