| Ledbury 1st XV 53 Worcester Wanderers 1st XV 3
Ledbury 1st XV’s excellent form in Midlands 4 West South continued at Ross Road on Saturday with another emphatic victory, this time scoring nine tries to nil in the process. The 119 points and 19 tries recorded in this and the last league game lifted Ledbury above of Old Coventrians on points difference into the second automatic promotion place with just three matches left.
Despite a strong wind and wet handling conditions the game contained a lot of entertaining attacking rugby, although the visitors never really looked like breeching the home teams defence, where Jack Wilesmith, Leo Lockwood and James Handley were outstanding. Whilst the overall performance of the Ledbury players was good, and the scrum particularly impressive, it was young debutant scrum half Peter Wood who caught the eye. Apart from the high quality of his passing and general play he scored three superb tries, two from half way and all three involving running skills of the highest order.
Wanderers actually took an early lead with a penalty after three minutes, but two quickfire tries by Sam Scholefield and Will Green, and a Luke White conversion, knocked them out of their stride. The first two of Wood’s tries followed by half time, and with a lead of 26 points to 3, Ledbury focused on improving their points tally.
With the result never in doubt after the break, the first twenty minutes of the second half saw Wanderers somehow managing to protect their line with stout defence and a few close calls. However they had no answer to Ledbury’s final push for points as hooker Jock Welch smashed through two would be tacklers for his seventh try of the season with fifteen minutes left. Three more tries followed in the dying minutes as Ledbury’s fitness and ambition came to the fore, one each for White and Lockwood and the last one, to the delight of his colleagues, for Peter Wood.
This Friday Ledbury travel to Droitwich for a floodlit North Midlands Shield match at 7.30, and then go to Evesham on 29 March for the next vital league game.
