HEREFORDSHIRE CUP
The Herefordshire Cup took place this weekend at Ledbury. Luctonians withdrew, leaving Hereford, Bromyard and Ledbury to compete. Hereford and Ledbury both put in two teams, so there was plenty of Rugby to play.
Ledbury A had high hopes of getting their hands on the cup for the first time, but the usual problem of starting slowly and not being fully focussed proved once again to be their undoing.
Hereford B beat Ledbury A 2 tries to 1, after Alistair Martin put the hosts ahead with a strong run from halfway. The large forwards on the Hereford side turned it around in the second half, and a few missed tackles cost Ledbury dear.
The second Ledbury team played Bromyard first, and despite true grit and determination, were unable to threaten a much improved Bromyard side, who scored three tries of their own. The Ledbury team had hard matches, and competed well, with good forward performances, excellent tackling from Dan Risbey, and determined running from Henry Lee. Matt Thomas excelled in the Mauls, and it was only after several phases that the lines were broken.
The other Ledbury team improved, and wins against the other Ledbury team, and against Bromyard, with excellent trys from Matty Hand and Joe Fowke, left the final game against Hereford as the decider, Ledbury needing to score an unlikely 6 tries.
On a big pitch, the teams tired, and Hereford ran out winners by 2 tries to nil, to retain the cup for another year.
Thanks to Mark Warrilow for organising the day. The weather was reasonably kind, and a good day was had by all. A fitting end to a long season.
