Match report
21st November 2010
Ledbury U15 28 - St Joseph Newport U15 27
This was a new fixture for Ledbury, and as the teams came out onto the pitch, it was a typical Welsh side in appearance, with heavy forwards and stocky backs. It was therefore a surprise to hear that they did not have a front row and wanted uncontested scrums!
The Ledbury side again had a large squad with 25 players keen to get on the pitch.
The game was evenly matched throughout, but there were alot of handling errors early on from both sides. The visitors scored first, after several phases of play. The Ledbury defence left a gap and the centre touched down in the corner. Conversion missed.
Ledbury responded immediately, and when the ball came back from a ruck on the ST Jos 5 metre line, James Maisey, making his debut, took the ball and dived over. Steve Evans converted.
The opposition came back strongly and scored again wide, conversion missed again. Then Liam Colledge picked up from number 8 and powered over for Ledbury's second try. Joe Fowke Converted. On the stroke of half time, a third score for the opposition gave them a one point lead going into the second half.
After half time,Ledbury put some good phases together, resulting in a chip through from ALi Martin, a kind bounce for Aaron James and another touchdown under the posts. Steve Evans converted. Soon after Ali Martin broke through the defence and left the fullback wrongfooted to score Ledbury's 4th under the posts. Steve Evans again converted.
The welsh outfit were not beaten yet. They came back with a drive from a penalty 5 metres out, and then found an overlap to score for a fifth time. One conversion followed, leaving Ledbury with a few minutes to see off for a just about deserved one point win.
The team are now playing with some confidence, and a third win in a row shows that they are a force to be reconed withwhen they apply themselves.
Well done boys!!
