Ledbury 1st XV 19 Kings Norton 1st XV 18
Ledbury returned to winning ways with a nail biting victory over Kings Norton at Ross Road on Saturday, overcoming a nine point deficit to take the lead with just eight minutes remaining. Playing their best rugby of the match in the final fifteen minutes the home side finally succeeded in imposing their patterns of play on the resilient visitors from Birmingham and ultimately deserved their victory.
Ledbury began well, moving the ball though numerous hands to set up a penalty chance for Luke White after only three minutes. White converted the opportunity, as he did with one just before the end of the first quarter when he restored Ledbury’s three point advantage following a Kings Norton penalty. However, a try for the visitors gave them the lead which they held until half time.
White edged Ledbury ahead with a third well struck penalty, although it was only tenacious tackling and covering from their back row of Sam Scholefield, Andy Cooper and Mike Dwyer which kept their advantage. Indeed two unconverted tries from Kings Norton in the space of seven minutes gave the visitors an 18 points to 9 lead with time running out. Crucially the scorer of their final try was forced to touch down in the corner thanks to the covering tackle of the impressive Jack Wilesmith, thus making the kick very difficult.
At this juncture Ledbury began to dominate in terms of territory and possession, and White raised the crowds spirits with a fourth penalty. With Matt Williams and Sam Scholefield dominating the line outs the pressure finally told when White carved through the Kings Norton defence following a break from James Handley. White completed the scoring with the conversion, giving him a crucial 100% place kicking record on the day. Ledbury’s superior fitness and belief were vital in this hard fought victory, as they will be in the next league game away to Shipston on Stour next Saturday.
