Ledbury 1st XV 40 Southam 1st XV 0

Ledbury’s promotion charge gathered momentum with a six try to nil demolition of Southam at Ross Road on Saturday. Cheered on by a large crowd who were richly entertained by the home teams adventurous style of play, Ledbury dominated all phases of the game from start to finish and with a little more precision in their passing and decision making could have scored several further tries.

Hooker Jock Welch added to his growing number of tries when he finished off a driving maul from a line out after 10 minutes and James Handley did the same at the end of the first quarter to give Ledbury a healthy 13 points to 0 lead, fly half Chris Fisher having already dropped a goal. Fisher made a good impression on players and supporters alike on his first team debut, as did fellow debutant Matt Panter. Panter’s performance at prop was all the more creditable coming as it did in his first season of senior rugby and after only a handful of games in the front row.

The home team finished the first half strongly, and effectively ensured victory, with Luke White stroking over a penalty and then converting a try by the strong running Will Green who outsprinted the opposition from half way following a quickly taken free kick which epitomised Ledbury’s ambition. Although outclassed, and with no realistic chance of winning, Southam did not lack effort or spirit but they had no answer to Ledbury’s high tempo game and never threatened their line at any time.

Ledbury extended their 23 points to 0 half time lead through a second try by Handley who crashed past two would be tacklers following a pass by Sam Scholefield. White converted, as he did when Bruce Ruthven chased down his own kick ahead to outpace the defence. Southam did well to restrict Ledbury to one further try but it one that was worth waiting for, being scored by stalwart second row Matt Williams whose tries are as rare as Welsh success at Twickenham. Williams supported an excellent touchline break by scrum half Bruce Jones, received an inside pass outside the twenty two and outpaced the cover to score in the corner whilst brushing off an attempted tackle.

Next Saturday Ledbury travel to Old Leamingtonians, another team in the promotion mix, confident in their ability and determined to gain a further two points with each match now crucial as they chase second placed Old Coventrians who they trail by just one point.
