LEDBURY 1ST XV 47 EVESHAM 1ST XV 5
Ledbury began the new league season with a comprehensive victory over a hard working Evesham side in front of a good size crowd at Ross Road on Saturday. The benefit of many weeks intense training was evident as the home team pressurised Evesham from the start, matching their powerful forwards and dominating the tackle area. Varying the play well, by moving quick ball through the hands of backs and forwards or using fly half Bruce Ruthven to kick for position, Ledbury came close to scoring on a number of occasions before opening their account after twenty five minutes with a try for winger Will Green after a well executed miss pass in the centre.
The game was effectively settled in the remaining fifteen minutes of the first half as Ledbury ran in four more tries. The first of these was by flanker Andy Cooper who capitalised on earlier tenacious tackling by the forwards to pounce on a loose ball, the other three coming from breaks from deep in their own half by Paul Williams, James Handley and Matt Williams leading to scores from Luke White, Bruce Ruthven and White again.
The second half began with another try for Ledbury, this time by Handley, but Evesham refused to give up and continued to play with pride and commitment. The home team absorbed the pressure, with Jack Wilesmith to the fore in tackling Evesham’s strong running centres, and Luke White completed his hattrick with Ledbury’s seventh try towards the end. White’s conversion was his sixth from seven attempts.
Ledbury travel to Worcester Wanderers next Saturday and the seconds and thirds open their merit table season the same day. All three teams have prepared well in pre season training, with the total number attending exceeding seventy, and all have justifiably high hopes of successful seasons.
