Ledbury 1st XV 7 Shipston on Stour 1st XV 0
Ledbury rugby club enjoyed another successful set of results on Saturday with a clean sweep of wins for all three teams. The 1st XV completed the first half of their league programme with a crucial home victory over Shipston which saw them move up to second place as their nearest rivals lost. In a frustrating game, played in freezing conditions, and with a referee unsympathetic to Ledbury’s efforts to play the game at speed, the home side did enough to deserve the points.
Although their opportunities to move the ball were limited by the constant blowing of the whistle, Ledbury’s backs looked dangerous when in possession, and the strong midfield defence of Luke White, Will Green and Jack Wilesmith kept Shipston quiet. The home team actually went close to scoring with the first move of the game, the final pass to James Handley being adjudged forward as he went over in the corner after fine running from Olly Kaye.
Ledbury produced a well crafted try near half time, with a delicate chip in his own twenty two from fly half White and subsequent sharp passing leading to Leo Lockwood cruising along the wing from inside his own half to score under the posts. White’s conversion proved to be the final score, although excellent defence from Handley and the combative Matt Williams prevented what looked like a certain score for Shipston.
The 2nd XV, flying high at the top of their merit table with a 100% record, travelled to Kings Norton and despite being one player short turned in a powerful performance to defeat the Birmingham team by 38 points to 5. The rapidly improving Matt Contardi scores two tries for the second week running, and further scores from Jamie Williams (2) Churchill Ochuka and one from acting skipper Giles Goodwin emphasised their superiority.
The clean sweep was rounded off by the home victory of the 3rd XV against Kings Norton, scoring six tries to nil before injury reduced them to 13 and allowed the visitors to claw back two tries. The opposition had no answer to the collective skills and knowledge of Ledbury’s experienced back division, or the enthusiasm of the younger forwards.
The development of the club at all levels was also seen to good effect on Sunday as the usual high numbers in the youth section played in the morning, followed by the stars of yesteryear, and in some cases this year, in the afternoon in a veterans match. The next home game sees the 1st XV aiming for success in the North Midlands Shield at home to Bridgenorth on Saturday, kick off at 2.15.
