WORCESTER WANDERERS 1ST XV 14 LEDBURY 1ST XV 20
Ledbury made it two league wins out of two with a dogged performance at Worcester’s Sixfield complex on Saturday. Being 14 points to 3 down at half time against one of the other teams tipped for promotion meant Ledbury had to battle hard throughout the second period to maintain their good start to the season. Their control of the game increased as their superior fitness began to tell so that by the time they eventually took the lead with only five minutes of normal time left there was no way back for Wanderers.
Ledbury opened the scoring with a penalty from Luke White after fifteen minutes, but held the lead for just a few minutes before Wanderers scored a converted try following a blind side break some thirty yards out. The Wanderers forwards strove to exert pressure on the Ledbury line but despite territorial ascendancy could not find a way over, being stopped on two occasions by excellent tackles from Paul Williams and Sam Scholefield. It seemed that Ledbury had weathered the storm but they conceded another converted blind side try only four minutes before the break.
With more urgency in their play, Ledbury scored an opportunist try after only three minutes of the second half. A break from his own twenty two by Will Green led to a quick throw in from Toby Blandford enabling Bruce Ruthven to create space for the supporting James Handley to sprint over for a try converted by White. Ledbury now varied their attacks, with rolling mauls gaining valuable ground and the angled kicking of Ruthven constantly keeping the home team under pressure. Their efforts paid off when Ledbury’s increasingly dangerous backs made inroads deep into Wanderers twenty two and a strong run by Jack Wilesmith saw Luke White score near the posts. Another try in the dying seconds by Ruthven confirmed a hard win but in the end merited victory.
