16 Feb 08
Ledbury 1st XV 57 Old Leamingtonians 1st XV 13

In an excellent performance at Ross Road on Saturday, combining committed defence and expansive running and passing, Ledbury crushed an Old Leamingtonians team which had, like the home side, previously won all three league games. Despite the early loss of prop Will Rogers to a back injury, Ledbury’s forwards outplayed their opponents in the line out, where Matt Williams and Sam Schofield were outstanding, and in the loose. The revised front row of Andy Beeching, Jock Welch and Chris Chapman outlasted their bigger opposite numbers and played prominent parts in the home team’s superiority at the ruck.

After weathering Old Leamingtonian’s forwards effort in the first twenty minutes, Ledbury took control of the match with a shrewd drop goal from Bruce Ruthven. This was followed by a close quarter try for Welch, set up by one of many storming runs from captain Stu Davies and back rower Andy Cooper, and then by two more from wide out by centre Will Green and flanker James Handley.

A solitary penalty by the away side keep their flickering hope alive at half time, but this was immediately extinguished by another try by the tireless Handley, followed shortly after by one by Ruthven. Ledbury then increased the pressure on the Leamingtonian defence with attacks from all over the pitch, with Ollie Kaye and the versatile Bruce Jones to the fore. To the delight of the appreciative crowd, the home team scored three more tries through Ruthven, Schofield and Green, with Luke White slotting seven conversions out of eight. A drop goal and a penalty try were scant consolation for the game but well beaten away side.
