Coventry Dunlop 1st XV 24 Ledbury 1st XV 21
Despite a spirited fight back which produced two converted tries in the last five minutes, Ledbury fell to their first league defeat of the season at Coventry Dunlop on Saturday. A combination of a strong opposition pack and a good kicking game from their fly half were ultimately decisive for the home team, and the first half points they accumulated when playing with the wind proved too much for Ledbury to overhaul. Some solace was gained by an improved second half performance but in the end the loss of Jamie Williams and Paul Williams to ankle and shoulder injuries took their toll.
Ledbury in fact made an encouraging start, dominating the first ten minutes without being able to convert territory and possession into points. Dunlop capitalised on their first scoring opportunity with try after eleven minutes, and went further ahead with two converted tries after twenty three and thirty four minutes. A nineteen point deficit was not an insurmountable hurdle and hoped were raised by a well constructed try after fifty one minutes by Luke White which he converted himself.
The introduction of Shaun Nash and Dai Jones at half time added strength to Ledbury’s forward effort, and the excellent line out work of Matt Williams kept the away side in contention until a try against the run of play put Dunlop 24 points to 7 ahead and seemingly out of reach. This proved to be the case as Ledbury could not quite take the chances they created until good handling and running saw converted tries for Luke White and Jack Wilesmith at the end of the match.
Refusing to be despondent, and buoyed by the news of a superb win by the third team in their merit table clash with Upton seconds by 44 points to five, and by the imminent return from injury of captain Stu Davies, Ledbury immediately turned positive thoughts to this Saturday’s home clash with Kings Norton.
