LEDBURY 1st XV 17 COVENTRY DUNLOP 1st XV 9

Ledbury maintained their promotion challenge with another home victory in their latest league match against Coventry Dunlop at Ross Road on Saturday. A three try to nil differential hints at a comfortable win but it was not until the final try was scored with only a minute of normal time left that the good sized crowd could relax and enjoy the victory. Without really threatening the Ledbury line, Dunlop did enough to keep themselves in the game by converting three penalties which meant that the home side could never create a breathing space despite their try scoring advantage.

It was only due to the hard work of the staff, employees and players and a relative improvement in the overhead conditions that the match was able to be played at all. Many of the pitches had flooded earlier in the week and it was thus inevitable that the game would contain handling errors as the ground cut up and the ball became slippery. Nevertheless, Ledbury were determined to play a fifteen man game and looked dangerous on a number of occasions before hooker Jock Welch crashed over after eighteen minutes to give the home team the lead after an early Dunlop penalty.

A further penalty restored Dunlop’s advantage but they had no answer to excellent handling by the Ledbury backs on the half hour which saw winger Olly Kaye give the scoring pass to centre Luke White who also converted his own try. Dunlop edged back into contention with a third penalty after fifty seven minutes and with a lead of only 12 points to 9 Ledbury could not relax. As has been the case as the season has progressed the scrum saw Ledbury increasingly dominant and whilst the usually excellent line out underwent a few blips enough possession and territory was gained to prevent a Dunlop comeback. Victory was sealed when a well organised maul from a line out near the Dunlop line enabled James Handley to score the clinching try.

The league campaign continues at Woodrush on Saturday where another stern test will be provided by one of the other teams in contention for promotion.
