Westons Community Rugby Project
Aims of Project
- Increase playing numbers throughout the current participating schools.
- Raise the quality of playing standards.
- Introduce Tag Rugby within Schools at Year 3 & Year 4 level in conjunction with key Stage learning by way of Fundamentals & Multiskill activities.
- Strengthen the links with the club.
- Expand the Community Rugby Programme by 30% in terms of the number of Primary schools being involved in the initiative.
- Expand the Community Rugby Programme by 100% in terms of the number of High Schools being involved in the programme.
- Raise the profile of the annual Year 5 & 6 Tag rugby festival.
- Introduce a Tag festival for Year 3 & 4 children at Ledbury RFC.
- Bruce Ruthven to promote “healthy eating” and “exercise is key” initiatives throughout schools.
Tag Rugby Festival 2008 (please see attached pictures)
This year’s Tag Festival took place on the 18th April and saw 40 teams from 19 schools take part. The standard of rugby on display was of a high calibre with Gorseley Goffs P.S. taking the Cup competition and Much Birch P.S. winning the Plate competition. Over 400 children took part in the Festival with every player receiving a medal for their efforts.
Plans are now well under for the next academic year beginning in September with a greater number of High Schools expected to be involved. Newent and John Kyrle have expressed interest in receiving coaching from September with John Masefield once again being heavily involved.
A Floodlit Cup is currently being planned to be held at Ledbury RFC for Year 7 – 10 pupils from John Masefield, John Kyrle and Newent. This is scheduled to take place in early spring 2009.
A Multi-skills Festival is also being planned for Key stage 1 & 2 pupils from surrounding schools.
The Community Rugby Project has also conducted the following events since September 2007;
- FASST Multi-skills Festival at Kingscaple P.S. June 2007 & June 2008
- Hereford Youth Games Tag Rugby Festival. June 2007 and June 2008
- Herefordshire Emerging Schools Tournament February 2008
- In association with Hereforshire Tourism board (University of The Great Outdoors) Tag Rugby exhibition at Eastnor Castle. May 2008
- Conducted October/February/Easter Training Days in the Half-term holidays for children aged eight to thirteen
- Ledbury RFC will be hosting a Summer Camp over two days on the 31st July and 1st August.
- Awards Assembly at St.Josephs C.E
